Contested Cities in the Modern West

Abstract |
Cities are close-knit communities. The author points out that when rival ethnic groups develop which refuse to concede predominance, deep conflicts may occur. Some conflicts are resolved peacefully, some are resolved in favour of one ethnic group, and some resort to violence to resolve the conflicts. The author devotes a chapter (pages 95-127) to Montreal's "Peaceful Reconquest" resolution of its ethnic (French-English) conflict.
