L'impact du climat social et économique sur la musique francophone et anglophone au Québec

Abstract |
The author analyzes whether there are a) similarities or differences between the song lyrics in French and English in Quebec, and b) whether there is an association between social climate and the values conveyed in popular songs. She coded the absence or the presence of the nineteen values in the words of 795 songs from Quebec (385 in French and 410 in English), from 1979 to 2009. The author found that the values most present in popular songs, regardless of the language, are hedonism, personal security and benevolence-reliability. When the content is related to the social and economic climate of Quebec, her results indicate that the content of songs in French advocate interpersonal conformity, that is artists sing about avoiding harming others, unlike songs in English which deal with novelty, change and the importance of maintaining a good public image.
