Les minorités linguistiques du Canada et la santé

Abstract |
The authors set out to identify the health issues associated with belonging to an official linguistic minority in Canada (Anglophones in Quebec and Francophones outside of Quebec). Their research allowed them to highlight the social and health disparities that can be attributed to belonging to a minority. They found that in Quebec the English-speaking minority presents two distinct portraits according to whether it lives in the Montreal metropolitan area or in other regions of the province. Montreal is known for its large public Anglophone institutions, and Quebec has incorporated an article in its Health Services Act to provide services in English. On the other hand, the Anglophone minority living in eastern Quebec seems particularly vulnerable. These results suggest a relationship between the French-language national assertion and a more pronounced adverse health situation for the English-speaking minority in the regions.
