Abstract |
An account of James (Demon) Dunlop (1757-1815), a Scottish-born Montreal merchant and financier. Dunlop arrived in Montreal in 1782 after immigrating to Quebec City from Scotland in 1779. He became a successful import/export merchant in the city and in 1800 began engaging in bill brokering. By 1812 Dunlop was the most important bill brokering operator in British North America and, according to the author, one of the founding fathers of Canadian finance.
