‘Loyal and Dutiful Subjects of Her Gracious Majesty, Queen Victoria’: Fugitive Slaves in Montreal, 1850-1866
Abstract
The author examines the growth of the African-American fugitive slave community in Montreal from 1850 to 1866. Census estimates of the Black population in the city varied from one thousand to six thousand. Although Montreal residents were generally tolerant of the refugees, they feared large Black immigrations, and racial discrimination did occur.
