Abstract |
Includes information on Montreal's developing art institutions of the mid-nineteenth century, fostered predominately by the city's English-speaking elite. The Seneca, New York-born Robert Scott Duncanson (1821-1872) stayed in Montreal from 1863 to 1865 to escape the racial prejudice he encountered in the United States. According to the author, he was thought of as one of "the earliest of our professional cultivators of the fine arts." His style of landscape painting was popular among the city's new landscape photographers. Duncanson sometimes painted directly from photographs.
