Let the Niggers Burn: The Sir George Williams University Affair and Its Caribbean Aftermath
Abstract
A protest in 1968 by six Black Caribbean students at Montreal's Sir George Williams University (now part of Concordia University), who accused a biology professor of racism in his assignments marking, led to the occupation of the school's computer center in January 1969 by up to 400 people. On February 11, 1969, a riot broke out between the protesters and the police and the computer center suffered damages in the millions of dollars when a fire broke out. Some 95 people were arrested. A special committee of the university looking into the charge of racism by the biology professor determined that there was nothing in the evidence before them to substantiate a general charge of racism.
