Présentation des perspectives provisoires de la population du Québec, 1981-2001

Abstract |
The author points out that data from the 1976 and 1981 censuses show that between 1971 and 1976 and between 1976 and 1981, 65 % of those leaving Quebec had English as their mother tongue, around 25% had French as their mother tongue and around 10% had other languages. Calculating for 1976-1981, ratios on the average population of the period, the author estimates an exit rate of 17.5% for Anglophones, 1.0% for Francophones and 5.4% for others. He concludes that to maintain this rate of out-migration would be to assume a massive emigration of Anglophones in the near future or a significant change in the linguistic characteristics of interprovincial out-migrants.
