| Abstract |
The authors analyze the ways in which Quebec categorizes and mobilizes its inhabitants. They maintain that through categorizations, inhabitants are either included in or excluded from the mythical realm of nationhood. For example, at one time, knowledge of French sufficed as a condition for inclusion in the “national” group. By the late twentieth century, the cultural criteria excluded outsiders from attaining insider status.
