Abstract |
From the early nineteenth century, the coves along the St. Lawrence at Quebec City were renowned for the role they played in the region’s squared timber trade with Great Britain. It was not until the 1850s, however, that ship labourers took collective action and formed the Quebec Ship Labourers’ Benevolent Society. The author examines how Irish immigrant and French Canadian ship labourers’ united to make the Benevolent Society one of the most powerful labour organizations of its day in Canada.
