| Abstract |
The Scottish-born William Brown (c.1737-1789) and the American-born Thomas Gilmore (c. 1741-1773) entered into partnership in 1763 to set up the first printing-press in the province of Quebec. Among the important printers in Quebec during the period under review were the Scottish-born brothers Samuel (1771-1793) and John Neilson (1776-1848), Quebec City-born Thomas Cary (1787-1869) and the Irish-born Montreal printer John Lovell (1810-1893).
