Title
Access to Healthcare for Quebec’s English-Speaking Communities: Key Issues and Research Needs
Abstract
The author summarizes recent research on access to health and social services for Quebec’s English-speaking official language minority community (OLMC). She draws from the Bibliography on English-Speaking Quebec, the Community Knowledge Open Library, and the Document Centre of the Community Health and Social Services Network (CHSSN). Key themes, research gaps, and priority areas for further study are highlighted. Her key findings are: Persistent barriers include language, geography, and socioeconomic factors; Legal protections for English-language services exist but practical implementation often falls short, requiring advocacy and policy review; Patients rely on community networks and bilingual caregivers to navigate language barriers, though these strategies are not always effective; and Mental health issues, especially among youth, are increasing, highlighting the need for accessible, culturally appropriate care.
