Title
The Crystal and the Thought: Fritz Brandtner: Art and Education
Abstract
The German-born Fritz Brandtner (1896-1969), painter, draughtsman, muralist and teacher, immigrated to Canada in 1928, settling first in Winnipeg and then moving to Montreal in 1934. Brandtner introduced notions of the German Expressionists to Canada, especially the works of Bauhaus and abstractionism. The author examines Brandtner's philosophy and pedagogy as an artist and teacher, as outlined in his personal journals. Dr. Norman Bethune and Marian Scott were among Brandtner's first contacts in Montreal; the three shared a concern for social issues. In 1936, Bethune arranged an exhibition of Brandtner's work at Henry Morgan and Co. to benefit the Canadian League Against War and Fascism. The same year, Brandtner and Bethune founded the Children's Art Centre, with Scott soon joining the teaching staff.
