Title
‘Pour se créer un avenir’ : stratégies de couples montréalais au XIXe siècle
Abstract
The author argues that married couples were important entrepreneurial agents of economic expansion in Montreal in the second half of the nineteenth century. Her argument is based on observations from a sample of 1,000 couples – French Canadian Catholic, Irish Catholic and Anglo-Protestant – traced in parish registers and notarial archives. She found that women during this era, despite legal handicaps, played a dynamic role in the operation of kinship networks fundamental to the process of urbanization, to residential moves within the city and to social ambitions.
