Abstract |
The story behind the fresco that includes a portrait of Italian fascist leader Benito Mussolini that exists over the altar within the Church of the Madonna della Difesa (Notre-Dame-de-La-Défense), Montreal's Italian community's mother-church at the corner of Henri-Julien and Dante streets. Painted between 1930 and 1933 by artist Guido Nincheri (1885-1973), the mural commemorates the 1929 agreement between Pope Pious IX and the Italian government, headed by Mussolini, that created the Vatican City state. The fresco was also part of the Italian government's push to promote Italian nationalism and fascism among overseas Italian expatriates. In 1940, at the outbreak of the Second World War, Nincheri was interned by Canadian authorities as a fascist sympathiser for including Mussolini in the fresco.
