Abstract
With the great migrations of mostly Irish immigrants in the 1830s and 1840s, politicians in Lower Canada and the United Canadas revisited their regulatory mechanisms for migratory movements within the colony to render them more efficient. The political concern was not only for public health reasons, but also the fear of the impact that infectious diseases such as cholera and typhus carried by the immigrants would have on the social order. State-run influence over individual freedom of movement from the mid-nineteenth century forward would be justified on the grounds of public health.
