Thomas Bassett Macaulay and the Bahamas: Racism, Business and Canadian Sub-Imperialism
|
Abstract |
An examination of the discussions that took place in 1911 about the possibility that the Bahamas might become a Canadian province. The driving force behind the campaign to annex the Bahamas to Canada was T.B. Macaulay (1860-1942), an executive with the Montreal-based Sun Life Assurance Company. Macaulay believed that Canada should assume more of the burden of governing Britain's colonies in the Western hemisphere. The author claims that contemporary anxieties about race contributed to the failure of Macaulay's initiative to gain much support outside the Bahamas.
