Title
Persistances seigneuriales. Histoire et mémoire de la seigneurie au Québec depuis son abolition
Abstract
Officially abolished in December 1854 after several decades of debate, the author notes that the seigneurial system, a vestige of New France, took a long time to die out completely in Quebec. He points out that the story of this slow death is one of a meeting between tradition and modernity, feudalism and liberalism. The law abolishing feudal rights and duties at a time of capitalism and urbanisation paradoxically had the effect of favouring the seigneurs and legitimising the maintenance of economic relations and privileges for over a century. Undertaking archival research combined with an oral history survey, the author recounts this process and observes its traces (economic, cultural and heritage) right up to the very recent past. At the time of their abolishment, almost half the seigneuries in Quebec were owned by English speakers. By analysing the mechanisms and forms of these seigneurial reminiscences in twentieth-century Quebec by both Francophones and Anglophones, the author examines their significance and impacts on contemporary Quebec in the light of its feudal past.
