Title
Commercial Leviathan: Central Canadian Exhibitions At Home and Abroad During the Nineteenth Century
Abstract
An examination of the history of agricultural and industrial exhibitions in Upper Canada/Ontario and Lower Canada/Quebec from 1791 to the 1890s. They began as voluntary associations among elites, but during the first third of the nineteenth century began to receive state funding, and by the end of the century a bureaucratic organization had developed. Exhibitions were unsuccessful in Quebec where only six percent of farmers belonged to agricultural societies, but they enjoyed considerable success in Ontario where they received support from farmers and the general public. The author argues that this was at the cost of noble purpose, for as they became more popular, their educational influence became less manifest.
