Abstract
The American-born Charles Carroll Colby (1827-1907), lawyer, businessman, and politician, was an Eastern Township entrepreneur who developed a vast economic and political network on which he built his business empire in Canada and abroad. The author outlines the evolution of this network, and how Colby used it to influence his investments in mining, railways, and nineteenth-century technology, including the "noiseless" typewriter.
