Title
Mile End : Une singulière pluralité
Abstract
An homage to the eclectic history of the Mile End district of Montreal. The author points out that the area was originally developed by Francophone builders at the turn of the twentieth century, but the neighbourhood became home to many changing groups over the decades: Anglophone Protestants and Catholics between 1900 and 1910; Jews who dominated the neighbourhood between 1910 and 1940; then immigrants from Portugal, Greece, and Eastern Europe in the 1950s to the 1970s; then artists, students and young workers since the 1980s. In 2003 a non-profit organization, Mémoire du Mile End, was created whose mission is to promote the history, culture and heritage of the Mile End district. The author was a member of the board of the Mémoire du Mile End from 2003 to 2011.
