Title
The 1913 Spring Exhibition of the Art Association of Montreal: Anatomy of a Public Debate
Abstract
The author discusses the flood of commentary in Montreal newspapers, both by critics and by readers, over the 1913 Spring Exhibition held by the Art Association of Montreal. By examining the reactions in seven Montreal daily newspapers (four English language and three French language), the author focuses on the public debate the exhibition generated. The first part of the article looks at the exhibition in the context of the Montreal art scene in the early 20th-century. The second part analyzes the newspaper coverage of the exhibition, focusing on the scope and nature of the polemical comments made by critics and journalists. In the final section of the article, the author examines the relationship between art critics and the public and the extent to which the public debate about the exhibition was related to issues of modernism and tradition.
