Les églises protestantes et l’assistance aux pauvres à Montréal au XIXe siècle

Abstract |
Charity in nineteenth century Montreal was organized along denominational lines. The author focuses on the various Protestant efforts to aid the poor of the city. She compares Protestant aid programs with Catholic social services, which included orphanages, shelters and other institutions not provided by Protestants. She points out that while Protestant aid networks founded missions to accommodate the influx of immigrants, their support came largely from elites rather than from clerics. The author argues that this coloured the aims of the Protestant aid societies.
