Réflexions sur l’évolution du discours démolinguistique de Jacques Henripin

Abstract |
The author assesses the contribution of demographer Jacques Henripin (1929-2013) to the study of linguistic groups in Quebec and in Canada. The author points out that Henripin’s work on demolinguistics shows an evolution over three periods. During the 1960's and the 1970's, Henripin's writings reveal a strong concern for the long-term future of Quebec’s Francophones vis-à-vis Anglophones and Allophones. In the succeeding two decades, the author maintains, Henripin's publications support the conclusion that the long-term demographic prospects for Quebec Francophones are favourable. However, according to the author, Henripin’s writings since the beginning of the 2000's, are characterized by a return to a more "pessimistic" view of the demographic future of the Francophones of Quebec vis-à-vis Anglophones and Allophones. A bibliography of Henripin's publications is included.
