Abstract |
Includes demographic analysis of Anglophone and Allophone populations on the island of Montreal between 1986 and 1996, including birth rates and out-migration. The author predicts the slow decline of the Francophone population in the province between 1996 and 2021, especially on the island of Montreal. As for the Anglophone population, the author predicts that it could look forward to a much slower decline in the last years of the twentieth century than it had seen in the period 1986-1996; on the other hand, he predicts its share in the total population will continue to decline sharply by 2021. Only the Allophone group will grow, he concludes, both in terms of the workforce and the share of the total population. On the island of Montreal, he predicts, the Allophone workforce (and therefore their share of the total population) will exceed that of Anglophone population shortly after 2006.
