Abstract
The story of the last smallpox epidemic in Canada, in which over 3,000 Montrealers died in less than four months in 1885. More than half of those who died were under the age of 6. According to the author, the epidemic in the city turned French against English, Protestant against Catholic, and rich against poor. Troops had to be called out to guard smallpox hospitals against anti-vaccination rioters.
