Lecture sociolinguistique du recensement canadien : succès inespéré de la Loi 101

Abstract |
The author challenges the pessimistic forecasts by demographers Charles Castonguay and Frédéric Lacroix of the decline of the French language in Quebec. Examining language mobility statistics found in Canada's census data, the author points out that the integration of mother-tongue Allophones towards French has stabilized any decline of that language. French in Quebec is resilient, he notes, having absorbed 81.3 percent of all language mobility since 2001. The author concludes that it is time Francophones stopped living in fear of "the sea of English" around them and celebrate the immense contribution of Allophone communities to the vitality of the French language.
