Abstract |
The author notes that the Treaty of Paris, signed in 1763, had many implications for post-Conquest Francophone Quebec “nobility.” She explains that they were forced to adapt some of their practices to maintain their social status, which required creating relationships with the new British colonial authorities. The author’s research shows that during the forty years following the Conquest, 30 young women and 8 young men (for a total of 38 nobles) married non-Francophone spouses, mostly of a lower social rank. She claims that the spouses of noble women benefited from these alliances on a social and professional level more than the noble Francophone fathers of the brides. The author examines three mixed marriages entered into by members of the Godefroy de Tonnancour family to illustrate the different particularities of marriages involving a noble spouse and reflect the heterogeneity of these alliances.
