The monument to Lord Horatio Nelson, the heroic British navy Vice-Admiral, was erected in Montreal's New Market Place (now known as Place Jacques Cartier) in 1808. Nelson was killed in 1805 during his victory over the combined French and Spanish fleet at the Battle of Trafalgar. Montreal's monument to Nelson was one of three erected world-wide in his honour following his death.
