Abstract |
An examination of the collecting of nineteenth-century European paintings by Montreal collectors. The author dispels the myth that these collectors only bought "safe" art by then well-established painters. Among the collections examined by the author were those of Sir William van Horne, Sir George A. Drummond, Sir Donald Smith (Lord Strathcona), James Ross, Charles R. Hosmer and Edward B. Greenshields.
