Title
Les journaux durant les campagnes électorales québécoises
Abstract
The author asks whether the coverage of provincial electoral campaigns in Quebec's newspapers are biased, and whether the incumbent party is better treated both quantitatively and qualitatively in the newspaper coverage than the opposition party? As well, he wonders whether third parties are neglected, and is there a difference between the French language and the English language press? To answer these questions, the author examines the behaviour of three Quebec's newspapers during the 1989 electoral campaign -- The Gazette, La Presse and Le Devoir -- compared their coverage with the results of two similar researches conducted in the early 1970s and early 1980s. The author concludes that Quebec newspapers were more neutral in 1989 than they were twenty years before, that they presented a more balanced coverage of the two major parties, and that they neglect the third parties a little less, at least in news articles. He notes that the differences between French and English newspapers in 1989 also seem less marked even if The Gazette offered a slight omission with regard to the Parti Québécois and greater emphasis on third parties, which can be explained by the presence in the 1989 electoral struggle of the Equality Party. Overall, the author judged Quebec journalism in the 1989 to be at a greater distance from political parties than in the past.
