Le déclin d'une élite. L'évolution du discours communautaire public des francophones d'Anvers et des anglophones de Montréal

Abstract |
A comparison of the evolution of the economic, political and legal decline of Anglophones in Montreal and of Francophones in Antwerp, Belgium. Describing them as two 'forgotten' minorities in history, the author points out that English-speaking people of Quebec and French-speaking people of Flanders have been largely ignored by Canadian and Belgian historiography respectively. The author explains that the evolution of these former dominant minorities, which were once the 'definers of the situation' in Canada and Belgium, is nonetheless fundamental to understanding the linguistic conflicts that have occupied (and still occupy) these countries. She maintains that it is decisive for the shape of the Quebec and Flemish identities and, consequently, of the Belgian and Canadian nations. The comparison of these two minorities allows the author to identify the complexity and specificity of Quebec and Flemish nationalisms.
