Abstract
The Scottish-born Andrew Learmont Spedon (1831-1884) immigrated with his parent to Quebec in 1833, and in 1837 moved to Beechridge, part of the Seigniory of Beauharnois. In 1852, the family moved to St. Jean Chrysostome on the English River, and the following year Spedon (now over the age of twenty-one) enrolled in the Huntingdon Academy to complete his high school education. In 1857 he published "The Woodland Warbler, a volume of Canadian and Scottish poetry and songs", and in 1861 "Tales of the Canadian Forest", both to favourable reviews. By 1872, Spedon had published five more books. In 1873, after moving to Durham, in the Chateauguay parish of St. Malachie d'Ormstown, Spedon launched Ormstown's first newspaper, The New Dominion. He sold the newspaper in 1882, having by then moved to Bermuda.
