Title
Lord Howick and Lower Canada, 1830-1838
Abstract
An account of the policies of Henry George Grey (1802-1894), Viscount Howick, to reconcile early nineteenth century French Canadian ambitions with British Imperial objectives and English Lower Canadian interests. From 1830 until 1834, Howick served as Under-Secretary of State for War and the Colonies in the British Cabinet under his father, Prime Minister Charles Grey, and from 1835 to 1839 as Secretary of War in the Cabinet of Lord Melbourne. Howick believed that if given a dominant role in the administration of the colony, French Canadians would come to appreciate the superiority of British enterprise over French tradition.
