Abstract
The Canadian Pacific Railway (CPR) Company, Canada's first transcontinental railway, was founded in Montreal on February 16, 1881. Among the Montrealers associated with this new syndicate were George Stephen (1829-1921), president of the Bank of Montreal, Richard B. Angus (1831-1922), a director and future president of the Bank of Montreal and president of the CPR, Duncan J. McIntyre (1834-1894), founder of the Bell Telephone Company of Canada and owner of the Canada Central Railway, and Donald Smith (1820-1914), governor and principal shareholder of the Hudson's Bay Company. The author outlines the building of the railway.
