Abstract
The Montreal-born Victor Goldbloom (b. 1923) was a pediatrician, provincial politician, and Commissioner of Official Languages during his working career. A graduate of McGill University's Faculty of Medicine in 1945, he was a practising pediatrician for many years before he entered public life in 1962 as a governor of the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Quebec. In 1966 Goldbloom was elected to the Quebec Legislature for the Montreal riding of D'Arcy-McGee. In 1970 he became the first member of Quebec's Jewish community to serve in the provincial cabinet, under Premier Robert Bourassa. A minister of the National Assembly until 1979, Goldbloom served as Quebec's first environment minister, and later as municipal affairs minister and minister responsible for the Olympics Installations Board. From 1980 to 1987, Goldbloom was CEO of the Canadian Council of Christians and Jews, and from 1991 until 1999 he served as Canada's Commissioner of Official Languages.
