Title
Albert Peter Low et l’exploration du Québec-Labrador
Abstract
The Montreal born, McGill University educated geologist and explorer A.P. Low (1861-1942) worked as a surveyor for the Geological Survey of Canada. In 1890, he began surveying the Quebec-Labrador Peninsula. The author points out that over thirteen seasons Low sailed, canoed, dog-sledded and snowshoed some 10,000 miles in and around the peninsula, and produced the first general outline of the geology, physio-graphy, climate, vegetation, fauna and inhabitants of the region. Low later undertook survey work in Gaspé and Manitoba, and was leader of the 1903-04 Canadian Arctic expedition on board the Neptune. In 1906, he was appointed director of the Geological Survey of Canada, and in 1907 he became the first Deputy Minister of the federal Department of Mines, a position he held until his retirement in 1913. Low was also an athlete, and in the 1880s he played hockey for two famous teams, the McGill University Hockey Club, considered the first organized hockey club in the world, and the Ottawa Hockey Club.
