Title
The Story of the First Beaver Club
Abstract
Established in 1785 by nineteen mostly English-speaking Montreal fur traders, the Beaver Club was originally founded as a gentlemen's dining club "to bring together, at stated periods during the winter season, a set of men highly respectable in society, who had passed their best days in a savage country and had encountered the difficulties and dangers incident to a pursuit of the fur trade of Canada". The original members were predominately of Scottish origin and associated with the North West Company.
