Abstract
A reprint of four articles, published in English in the French-language Montreal newspaper, Le Devoir, from the 11th to the 14th March, 1914. The articles deal with English Montreal's attitudes towards French-speaking Quebecers, and the attitudes of English Quebecers toward the restriction of teaching and the use of the French language in Ontario. Charles Hazlitt Cahan (1861-1944), a Nova Scotia lawyer who moved to Montreal in 1909, offers an interesting hypothesis about the attitudes of Montreal's economic elite, mostly recruited from outside Quebec, compared to the attitudes of native-born English Quebecer, which counters Bourassa's representation that the economic and political elite are the English Quebec community.
