Abstract
Contains background on the founding (in 2005) and purpose of the Edmund Wood Foundation. Father Edmund Wood (1830-1909) established St. John the Evangelist Church in 1861 and began sharing with Montrealers his principles and ideals – theological, liturgical, social, and educational. Father Wood was a supporter of the Oxford Movement and its promotion of the Catholic tradition of Anglicanism. His support for education, and for social outreach to Montreal’s poor and marginalized, resulted in the establishment of important institutions that continue today as separate organizations: St Margaret’s Home for Incurables continues as part of the Father Dowd Nursing Home, St. Michael’s Mission to the Poor continues to operate from the church, and St John’s School today is known as Lower Canada College. The Foundation was founded to ensure the long-term future of St. John the Evangelist Church and its works.
