Multicultural Common Spaces and the Negotiation of Belonging: The English-Speaking Communities of Quebec and the Integration of Newcomers
Abstract
The authors use the conceptual framework of multicultural common spaces to explore the integration processes of immigrants into the English-speaking communities of Quebec (ESCQ). These multicultural common spaces seek to simultaneously promote and secure two related goals: to increase the overall collective vitality of English-speaking communities and allow the Anglophone population to be a bridge for newcomers seeking to fully integrate into Quebec's French culture and society. The authors argue that the institutional base of the ESCQ, along with personnel and community leaders, enable Anglophones to offer a multicultural common space for a diversity of newcomers to build a sense of attachment and belonging to Quebec.
