Title
The Commercial Class in Canadian Politics, 1792-1840
Abstract
The author suggests that the Conquest was more a union of the St. Lawrence Valley and the Atlantic seaboard economic interests than a defeat of France by England. This essay outlines the role of the Montreal merchants in the economic and political development of Canada from the late eighteenth-century to the mid-nineteenth century.
