Abstract |
The author discusses the slow abatement of discrimination against Jews within Montreal area Protestant school boards in the twentieth century. Until 1913, there were no Jewish teachers in Protestant schools, although twenty-three percent of the students were Jewish. In 1927, the Supreme Court of Canada held that the Protestant Boards were not obliged to accept Jewish teachers. And notwithstanding that Jewish parents were obliged to pay taxes to the Protestant Boards (even if their children went to private Jewish day schools), it was not until 1967 that they were permitted to sit on Protestant school boards.
