An example of how Montreal's early nineteenth century English-speaking elite used their membership in the Montreal Volunteer Militia to counteract their fear of French-Canadian nationalism and French revolutionary and Napoleonic invasions. The author focuses on the career of John Samuel McCord (1801-1865).
