Abstract |
A history of Montreal's Hebrew Free Loan Association (HFLA), established in 1911 by businessman Zigmond Fineberg, and the association's evolution over the past century. The founder and the board of directors came almost exclusively from the elite of the Jewish community. The primary purpose of the Association is to lend interest-free money to the needy, to people who could not otherwise obtain loans from banks or mortgage companies. The author considers changes in clientele, policy, the purpose of loans, and leadership over the years, and questions whether the HFLA, which (by 2004) has lent almost $100,000,000 since its founding, has been an expression of traditional Jewish immigrant culture or a reflection of adaptation to the new surroundings.
