| Abstract |
In March 1969, an organization known as "Opération McGill français" targeted McGill University as a symbol of the English-Quebec establishment. The organizers demanded the school's transformation into a Francophone institution. On March 29, 1969, a large demonstration that drew Quebec nationalists and socialists, and had support from trade unions and radical groups, marched on McGill University. Mainstream nationalist politicians, however, kept their distance. The city's English-language press characterized the organizers as xenophobic troublemakers and anarchists. The demonstration passed off with little violence., but marked the culmination of the movement. The founding of the Université du Québec à Montréal in April 1969 also ended the demand to transform McGill University into a Francophone institution.
