Abstract |
The Foreman Art Gallery is a university art gallery that was founded in 1991. It is part of Bishop's University, a liberal education institution offering primarily undergraduate programs located in the heart of the community of Lennoxville, now part of the City of Sherbrooke. The authors explain that Vicky Chainey Gagnon was appointed director of the gallery in 2005, and note that as a passionate curator, she is interested in contemporary and current art, and develops thematic exhibitions that address social issues. However, the authors point out that the relationship between the gallery and the University is strained. On the one hand, Vicky Chainey Gagnon must meet the requirements of the Canada Council for the Arts (CCA) by presenting professional artists, and on the other, she must meet the needs of Bishop's University and its educational mission. In addition, Vicky Chainey Gagnon sees the current art she exhibits as a social vehicle. The authors explain that it is a challenge for Vicky Chainey Gagnon to promote her work within the University by showing that her activities are related to the pedagogy and the student experience.
