L'Église et le sport au Québec à la lumière du concept d'acculturation
|
Abstract |
An examination of sporting practices brought to Quebec by Protestant British and Scottish settlers and military officers, and the evolving attitude of the Francophone Catholic Church in the province towards a perceived acculturation through sports. The author points out that the initial contact through sports of Anglophones and Francophones in the province from 1760 until 1850 was characterized by indifference by the Church towards such sports as horse racing, cricket, curling and athletic games involving British army officers and British and Scottish bourgeoisie. After 1850 until the early twentieth century, however, there was a more articulated opposition to certain aspects of sports by the Church. From the 1920s to the 1970s the Church adopted a positive expression towards sports, now seen as a pedagogical tool particularly useful to physical and moral formation of young people in school and leisure situations.
