Title
A Grandmother Remembers Grosse Ile
Abstract
Includes a history of the island, downstream from Quebec City, used as a quarantine station in the 1830s and 1840s to halt the spread of cholera and typhus brought to the Quebec by Irish immigrants. Thousands of Irish were quarantined on Grosse Isle in 1832 and 1848. Grosse Isle is the largest burial ground for Irish refugees of the Great Hunger outside Ireland. The author mentions the unveiling of the forty-foot tall Celtic Cross, a ceremony which she attended with her father in 1909.
