Abstract
Under the 1868 Militia Act, municipalities could requistion military support in times of emergency and civil disorder. During industrial disputes, it was common for local magistrates, supported by factory owners, to call in the militia to protect the property of the companies against strikers. Such was the case in July 1900 when the 53rd Sherbrooke Regiment was hastily assembled and shipped by train to Magog during a strike at the Dominion Cotton Mills.
